MANCHESTER UNITED boss Jose Mourinho has explained his reasons behind starting Jesse Lingard in the EFL Cup final against Southampton.

The 24-year-old has not been a regular in the United team in recent weeks.
But Henrikh Mkhitaryan's hamstring opened the door for a return to the side.
And Mourinho said he selected players who he felt were similar to the Armenia international.
He told: "We don’t have [Henrikh] Mkhitaryan and we think we need somebody with these characteristics.
"One against one, drive the ball, good dynamic and movement.
"So we made that decision based on that."
