MONACO cut through Manchester City to send Pep Guardiola out of the Champions League at the earliest point in his managerial career.
By BRUCE ARCHER
Guardiola had never failed to make the last eight of Europe’s top competition but City couldn’t stop the ferocious Ligue 1 side.
Monaco took the lead early in the first half as Kylian Mbappe beat Willy Caballero from close range.
Fabinho doubled the lead and put Monaco in front on aggregate just before the half hour mark.
Monaco had been totally dominant in the first half with City just not at the races, but they came out much stronger in the second and began creating chances.
Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling failed to capitalise though until Leroy Sane put City back in control of the tie finishing up after Sterling’s shot had been saved.
But six later and Monaco were ahead again - making it 3-1 on the night and 6-6 on aggregate - with Tiemoue Bakayoko scoring a header when left unmarked from a deep free kick.
City pushed forward in search of another goal which would have seen them through but Monaco held on and move into the last eight.
