Antonio Conte: Why I was to blame for Chelsea's defeat at Manchester United

ANTONIO CONTE admits he failed to motivate his Chelsea players properly before of their 2-0 defeat to Manchester United today.

Premier League leaders Chelsea were undone by Jose Mourinho's Manchester United either side of half time.

Ander Herrera appeared to handle the ball in the build up to the first goal before setting up Marcus Rashford to finish low from an angle.

Herrera fired in the second himself, via a deflection off Kurt Zouma, to dent Chelsea's title hopes and secure a 2-0 win.

And after the loss, Conte admitted United deserved the win.

"They deserved to win because they showed more desire than us and had more motivation," Conte told Sky Sports.

"But in this case I think the fault is mine.

"I wasn't able to give the players the right motivation for this type of game.

"To play this type of game from now until the end we must have more motivation and enthusiasm to try and reach the target [of the title].

"This for us is a fantastic target.

"I have concern because we have to work together and find quickly the right ambition to win this title - if someone thinks it's normal for Chelsea to win the title, we started as underdogs after 10th place last season.

"Tottenham is in good form and playing with enthusiasm, we must find the same."
Spurs have cut the 10-point gap Chelsea had over their London rivals to just four.

The two teams clash in the FA Cup semi-final next Saturday and Conte is wary of the threat from Mauricio Pochettino’s men.

"This league is not closed,” he said.

“Tottenham are on great form and playing with great enthusiasm, but we are playing a great season and we must try to reach this target.

"We started as underdogs and it won't be easy."

Manchester United’s win maintains their unbeaten record in the Premier League since October, which began after their 4-0 loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The Red Devils move up to fifth and sit four points off fourth-place Manchester City, who beat Southampton yesterday.

Discussing the game, United manager Mourinho said: "Chelsea are the best counter attacking team in the country and we controlled them very well.

“I’m really happy with the boys. I’m happy - not because it’s Chelsea, it’s because we need these three points.”

Rashford’s eighth-minute opener justified Mourinho’s decision to start the England international ahead of veteran Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

And the Portuguese boss was all praise for the striker.

"Marcus Rashford played fantastically well,” he said.

“He had a very good game at Stamford Bridge in the FA Cup, exactly the same chance to score, because he is faster than their defenders.

"Today he scored and it gave the team more confidence, more stability."
