Why Barcelona star Lionel Messi held up his shirt against Real Madrid

BARCELONA star Lionel Messi held up his shirt against Real Madrid to send a message he is still football's best player, according to reports.

Messi starred as Barcelona beat Real Madrid 3-2 on Sunday to keep their dreams of retaining La Liga alive.

The Argentina international bagged a brace - including a last-gasp winner - in a feisty El Clasico at the Bernabeu.

Messi held up his shirt to the Real crowd after his dramatic late intervention.
And Spanish outlet Don Balon claim the gesture was his way of sending a clear message to the world.

Messi was booed by Real supporters throughout and holding up his shirt in front of them was his way of revenge.

It is said the Barcelona No10 also did it because he wanted to show he was still the best player in the world.
Ballon d'Or rival Cristiano Ronaldo, by contrast, was caught on camera throwing a tantrum at the final whistle.

Despite the win, however, Barcelona still have work to do to win the title.

They currently sit at the summit ahead of Real on head-to-head record but have played one more game than their fierce rivals.
